Unless you’re heading out for a quick day trip to the slopes, purchasing a ski suit that’s packable and doesn’t take up the entirety of your luggage is one of the top things to consider when shopping for a one-piece. Finding a balance between something that’s lightweight and packable for travel and still offers warmth and waterproof capabilities is key.

Make sure to read reviews and follow the sizing charts when shopping for a one-piece ski suit, as you’ll need to account for what kind of layers you’ll be wearing underneath. Some suits have enough insulation that you’ll just need long underwear or a merino wool base layer, however, if you’re hitting the mountainside with extreme cold, you might want to throw a mid-layer fleece in there as well. If you plan to wear more layers under your ski suit, sizing up is likely a good choice.

Looking cute to shred some powder is important, of course. However, you don’t want to sacrifice comfort for style. Nothing is worse than being freezing cold and wet because your snowsuit wasn’t actually waterproof or lacked insulation. Take a look at the temperature rating when shopping and match that to where you’ll typically be wearing the suit. Some are rated to negative temperatures, while others only have you covered to about 20 degrees Fahrenheit. Additionally, ski suits that are waterproof and windproof will provide more warmth.

Long thermal underwear or a warm, moisture-wicking base layer is ideal for wearing underneath your ski suit. Check for synthetic fibers or merino wool, which is the preferred choice for its quick-dry capabilities and superior warmth. If needed, you can add a mid-layer, such as a fleece or lightweight puffy jacket, for an additional option to trap your body heat, keeping you toasty all day long.

Ski clothes should fit well, with some room for layering underneath. It’s better to have them a little looser than tight, so you can achieve a comfortable balance of being warm enough and not feeling weighed down with bulk.
